This was my first attempt at still-life painting since my teenage years and I really enjoyed the challenge, so much so, that I tried the composition twice! Of the two formats, while I like the softness of the painting of the landscape format still-life, my preference is for the portrait format still-life with its rich colour brightness.
As this also my first time painting with palette knives I can say that I had great fun with thicker paint application and once I got used to the techniques of application I found that the result was often surprising and pleasing to me eye.
For both paintings I spent a fair bit of time standing back or sitting back and trying to get used to ‘squinting’ at the picture before me to assess the main shapes, relationships, light and shade. Overall, I am reasonably happy with the resulting paintings.
